Katha 300M

300 million children.
One movement to teach differently.

Katha teachers use stories to teach children to think, question, and read with confidence. They have done this for 36 years, in classrooms across India. The 300M Alliance takes it further — to every school, every state, every child who deserves better.

The reality
Half of India's school children read below grade level.

300 million children go to school in India. About 150 million cannot read with understanding — despite years in a classroom.

Most classrooms run on the same method: copy, memorise, reproduce. Children learn to answer questions. They do not learn to think.

The books exist. The teachers exist. What changes the classroom is how the teacher teaches — and that is what the 300M Alliance works on.

A Katha classroom looks different — and produces different results.

Katha Lab School has run on StoryPedagogy® since 1988. The method works in government schools, budget schools, and community learning spaces. Attendance rises. Reading improves. Children come back.

Most classrooms

Copy, answer, move on

The teacher speaks. Children write. The lesson ends. Whether anything was understood — or felt — rarely enters the picture.

A Katha classroom

A story opens. The class takes over.

The teacher reads a story, asks one question, and steps back. Children argue, change their minds, ask better questions. TADAA — Think, Ask, Discuss, Act, Achieve — in motion.

What stays

A child who reads for meaning

Children trained in StoryPedagogy® read independently. They read books about Gender, Earth, Equity, Kindness — and they act on what they read. That is a Reader-Leader.

How teachers begin.

1

Pick a course in your language

teach.katha.org has courses in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, English, Assamese, Marathi, Odiya, Bangla, Urdu, and Telugu. Self-paced. No installation. Works on a phone.

2

Take one idea into Monday's class

Every course gives ready lesson flows — a story, a question, a discussion structure. Teachers use what they get the same week they learn it. The course is designed for that.

3

Talk to other teachers in KHELTE

KHELTE is the teachers' own forum on teach.katha.org. Teachers ask questions, share what worked, and push back on what didn't. 15,000+ members. The conversation runs daily.

My children used to sit and copy whatever I wrote on the board. After six months with StoryPedagogy, they argue about the characters. Last week, a child told me I was wrong about the story. She was right.
